Let’s fast forward and its the month of March. Realistically we should be coming to a close with seeing the big snowstorms hitting our area. Now its probably time to take a look at your roof once all that snow and ice melts. Here are the 4 major winter roof damage signs you need to look forward and what they come from:

  1. Ice Dams: People in many parts of the country dont know what an ice dam is, but as you go farther north, we know all too well that ice dams can be a major problem to our homes in the winter and early spring time. When warm air rises and heats your shingles it begins to melt your snow. But as the temperatures drop again at night this refreezes the snow and water and causes ice built up underneath your shingle. We start the process all over again as the sun comes back up and it begins to melt again trying to get anywhere it can into your home.

  2. Icicles: These are a lot like ice dams. While they may be pretty to look at they can cause damage as well. Not only do they pose a hazard if you are a passerby underneath them, they can cause damage to your gutters and shingles if they are heavy enough. If you want to attempt to remove them on your own, please keep a safe distance and use a handle of a rake to break them off. Be gentle though as they are likely attached to your gutter pretty good as well.

  3. Snow on roof tops: Large amounts of heavy snowfall can pose huge risk to your roofs. Purchasing a roof rake will help this cause tremendously.

  4. Attic Condensation: If ice dams are forming on your roof, its likely that moisture is forming in your attics ceiling. If you do not fix the problem you will have a major mold and roof rot problem in the future.

And there you have it, the major issues that could arise this winter and some signs to keep an eye on with your roof.
