World Wednesday: Johannesburg South Africa

Welcome to another version of World Wednesday everyone and today we will be traveling to the beautiful city of Johannesburg, South Africa! Pack a pillow and a blanket because your going to have some jet lag after this long flight!

Johannesburg, even though it has existed for over 120 years now and was founded in the year 1886, the gold rush era, it remains one of the youngest major cities in the world. There is also one city bigger then Johannesburg on the continent and that is the bustling city of Cairo, Egypt. This city is also home to the largest acute hospital in the world, Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital. It has 2,694 beds along with being the only public hospital serving 3.5 million people in the general area. Johannesburg is also home to the worlds largest man made forest with over 10 million trees planted. This number is set to grow even further as the city launched the Greening Soweto project in 2006. There ultimate goal is to plant an extra 200,000 trees in the famous township. All of this is combating the greenhouse effect, but it is also reducing urban noise as well. We can all agree that sounds great, right?

Johannesburg is also the world's largest city not built on a coast line or on a lake or river. They are known for being called the "worlds largest dry port" as they constantly receive dry port that come in through the ports of Durban and Cape Town. If you ever find yourself landing in the Tambo International Airport, know that is was named after the former leader of the African National Congress. It is also the busiest airport in Africa. Jo'burg also boasts the Hillbrow Tower as being the tallest structure in the city. There actually used to be a restaurant at the top of the building which would revolve. But it was shut down in 1981 for safety reasons. Wow, I wonder what kind of reasons made them close it down?

If you are already bored, you can visit the Johannesburg Zoo, which is based in Parktown. This Zoo is over 100 years old and boasts the only two polar bears in Africa which there names being Geebee and Wang. Unfortunately you probably should not let your guard down, Johannesburg is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. But rest assured, it is known that after you call 911, it takes an average of 60 seconds for police to respond to a crime scene. One of the more interesting things about this city is that they have a CCTV system that covers every street cover and scans license plates. Talk about technologically advanced!

If you find yourself craving a boiled egg when you are visiting the city of Jo'burg, know that it will take you one minute longer to boil the egg in the city then it does on the coastline. Why is this? This is because Jo'Burg is 2000 feet above sea level and the air is not as dense. They have quite the array of music in Jo'burg with it being the home of Kwaito music. It is a catchy genre of african house music that was born in the 1990s. If you are looking for someone a little more thrill seeking in the city you might want to pay a visit to the Shaft of Terror. It is located at the popular amusement park in Golf Reef City. Essentially it is a vertical drop roller coaster and is also known for being the tallest and faster roller coaster in Africa. It is a drop of about 47 meters and a G-Force of over 6 G's!

Need some gold? Well you are in luck. It is also known as the city of golf as well because of its start as a gold mining town. Another interesting thing to note is that miners who worked in Jo'burg Africa moved to California started a Johannesburg, California! If you are wondering about the weather is it considered a subtropical climate with mild, sunny winters and pleasantly warm summers with the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. Sounds like a dream right? No snow! The average temperatures goes from 50 degrees in June to 70 degrees in July.

Now that you are an expert on all things Johannesburg let's dive into some details about this beautiful modern home in Jo'burg. This home is labeled as Kloof Road. This modern home was assembled by using black steel. Amazing right? The architect behind this home, Nico van der Meulen, utilized a bunch of glass to bring about a balance of light and space to the home inside. His thought that would be impossible with just concrete and metallic walls. Most people who pass it confuse it for a sculpture but clearly the building is a work of art. Now that you have learned a little bit more about this home, let's take a look at a few more photos of it.
